Independence Day 2021 in Bishkek marked the 30th year since its independence from the USSR. The day began with a parade along the main street through the government quarter which I unfortunately missed (it included tanks, so I’m extra sad I couldn’t see it – there’s always Victory Day, at least), then followed that with celebration throughout the parks and squares in the city. By the evening, Ala-Too Square was pretty much full to the brim with people who were there to see the evening performance, which included both traditional dance and music. The celebration probably would have been more fun had I known more about what to see and do around the city, but to be honest, it seemed like most people didn’t really know what was happening. My host family, for instance, wasn’t sure if there would be a concert or parade at all until the day of.
