Today, our little group took a trip to Burana, about an hour and a half outside of Bishkek. There are located the ruins of an old Silk Road city which was called Balasagun, the most of which have been more or less lost to time. However, the watchtower minaret is still mostly intact. Standing at roughly 80 feet tall, the tower used to stand over 140 feet before an earthquake destroyed the top half somewhere in the 1400s. There is still a usable staircase within the tower (pictured below), which was frankly terrifying both up and down due to both the steepness and darkness, but the view from the top was worth it. I can only imagine both the climb and the view back when the tower was intact — given the flatness of the Kyrgyz plains, you could really see for miles in all directions. We also saw a yurt in the process of being built (more on that after next week) and noticed that the top section, or Tyukmuk, is the basis for the design of the Kyrgyz flag. I repped the Blazers today because I figured that this was a pretty cool spot for Wear in the World. What can I say –I need my 15 minutes of fame.
